Sounds and Vibrations

Sounds and Vibrations

 Project Based Learning (STREAM)

Our project was Sounds and Vibrations. We were introduced to vocabulary words, sound, vibrations, energy, pitch, and sound waves. During our project we explored what a sound is,  through  experiments.  The first experiment we observed was if sprinkles would move if we put a sound next to it. This experiment was fun to watch as the sprinkles danced. We concluded that the lower the pitch was the more sprinkles moved and the higher the pitch the sprinkles did not move as much

The second experiment was water xylophone. We had four glasses with different amounts of colored water, then Ms. D’Arienzo tapped each glass to hear the pitch. The glass jar with the least amount of water sounded different than the glass with the most amount of colored water.

We also explored various types of musical instruments to play to see the sounds we can produce. The instruments that we explored were drums, bells, triangles, rhythm sticks, and tambourines.

Throughout the project we watched short videos about sounds and sound waves and learned that vibrations make sound waves and they travel in the air, then in our ears and that is how we hear them.

Then we created our own drums using cylinders. We used rhythm sticks to tap on them. We listened to the sounds they made. The different sizes of the cylinders made different sounds as well as the height and the lids of the cylinders. Some of the cylinders had lids, and some we used aluminum foil and rubber bands. We used a tin can to hear vibrations using a rubber band.
